Egypt sends blogger to jail

February 22, 2007 on 4:18 pm | In .english, news | No Comments

In Egypt, the 22-year old blogger Abdel Karim Nabil was sentenced to 4 years prison for ‘insulting’ islam and president. (sources: volkskrant.nl, news.bbc.co.uk, and of course freekareem.org). FYI, the egyptian blogger Rami Siyam i wrote about before, has been freed some time ago.

In my book, respect is something you earn, and not something you force down someone’s throat.

Anglicaanse kerk

February 19, 2007 on 4:16 pm | In .dutch | No Comments

Niets is minder waar:

‘The legislation permitting the divorce and remarriage of individuals within the Anglican Church of Canada (including admission to Holy Eucharist) was first passed at General Synod in 1965 and then again in 1967.’

Vreemde poep.

VMware for Linux fun

February 18, 2007 on 8:04 am | In .english | No Comments

VMware actually runs great now on my acer laptop :-) I have a “Windows XP Home Edition” on it, and thanks to this tweak, I now can have xp fullscreen at the exact screen resolution…. (the problem being vmware does not have 1280×800, which i have under ubuntu)… man, you just cant tell the difference anymore, its that good :-)

Perhaps run WoW under vmware then? Not that it really matters, but: No, that doesn’t work because the way vmware implements graphics. It does that more like VNC and Terminal Services, and not like actual Direct Rendering is done (with kernel modules etc.)

ATI driver working

February 10, 2007 on 11:46 am | In .english | No Comments

I didn’t completely ditch windows, as I planned to do. It’s now dual-booting between windows and ubuntu. Installing ubuntu was a good experience, everything worked out of the box, and the installation of the ATI proprietary driver was also extremely easy following these guidelines on the ubuntu forums. The result:
$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: MOBILITY RADEON 9700 Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6286 (8.33.6)

That’s just great. Google Earth works fine, and at the same speed as it runs under windows. With WoW under wine things are not perfect. WoW nor wine crash, and I can login into the game, but the world rendering just doesn’t work, it’s a ghostly image split in half and things are displayed double. Unplayable for now, but promising.
