Egypt arrests bloggers

The Egyptian police questioned four bloggers in Cairo today, and one of them, Rami Siyam, is still in custody. His (arabic) blog is about human rights organizations and opposition parties.

The human rights organization Reporters sans frontières earlier this year placed Egypt on the blacklist of countries that censor the internet. The other countries on this list are: China, Cuba, North Korea, Vietnam, Belarus (wit-rusland), Myanmar (birma), Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

More background information is, of course, to find at the EFF website: eff.org/bloggers.

New blood

This morning, reading up on the news, it looks like the Senate is also going to the Democrats. With Rummy gone already, things are looking very good. Only Virginia and Montana are too close to call at the moment but CNN projects that Virginia also goes to the Democrats. That would make the Senate 50-49 with Montana left. The two independents, Lieberman and a guy in Vermont, have both stated to side with the Democrats. So it’s basically the house, the senate and a majority of Democratic governors.

This is a very good thing as it puts the brakes on Bush that are so desperatly needed. I think everybody has a good day today. But we still have 2 years to wait before Bush himself is gone. Maybe he does not last that long in the face of Democratic inquiries in the house. Every day that Bush is president is a lost day, but at least he’s got opposition now.
